Planners:
Fifth graders are expected to write down assignments daily in their planners. Your child’s planner needs to be at school every day; it should travel home each evening and return again to school in the morning. Since you and I are both checking the planner each day, this is another valuable communication tool.
Reading at Home:
Fifth graders are required to read about 30 minutes every night including the weekend. If we are reading a novel as a class, I will assign chapters to be read at home each evening. If it doesn't take 30 minutes to read the assigned pages then they should read another book of choice to make up the time.
Homework:
Your student will have homework every night. Homework is important as it gives the children an opportunity to practice and review skills taught at school. We go over homework in class, and review problem areas. Students are told when an assignment will count as a grade. Each subject area receives one overall homework grade of 100 that is averaged into the report card grade.
Tests/Projects/Grades:
Tests and projects are always announced at least 1 week ahead of time. The students write this information in their planners. CMS Grading Scale is as follows: A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (60-69), F (below 60). Tests and major projects count as two grades and assignments and quizzes count as one grade.
